The redesign of the Weequahic Park playground integrates fixed play equipment with natural play environments that incorporate exiting topography, water, and music elements to encourage children to create, explore, and build their own unique play experiences. Using vertical elements through topographic mounds and seat walls, the design spatially separates play age groups without creating a physical barrier that would impede on the open use of the overall play space. The water fountain splash pad, musical instrument zone, and topographic mounds connect the 2-5 age group play with the 5+ age group play in a simple collaborative way that encourages the age groups to share the space.
